What Is a UFI Code?

UFI stands for “Unique Formula Identifier.” A UFI code is a 16-digit code that summarizes important elements of a chemical or chemical mixture formula for labeling purposes.

The UFI system is created and governed by the CLP Regulation, which is administered by ECHA. As of 2025, the CLP Regulation will require that, for all chemicals or chemical mixtures falling under the CLP Regulation:

The manufacturer of the chemical or chemical mixture must add the UFI to a label to accompany that chemical or mixture; and
Any importer or downstream user placing the chemical or chemical mixture must report the UFI to local poison centers with the EEA.
